Language Trainers: Hello Carlota! We’re delighted to have you here today. Why don’t you start telling us what language you teach and why you chose a career in teaching?
Carlota: I am currently teaching Catalan. I chose a career in teaching my native tongue because it is a minority language that represents the spirit of a great culture: the Catalan culture. As a part of it, I can say that most Catalan speakers feel very attached to our language and see it as a very important part of our identity.
Language Trainers: It is indeed! And how did your career teaching Catalan start?
Carlota: Language Trainers reached out to me in August 2020. By that time, I had been teaching for a couple of years and following the conventional teaching system. I used to teach English, French, and Catalan. From the moment I started working with Language Trainers, I have focused on teaching Catalan and I have met amazing people who are willing to learn and feel extremely motivated.
Language Trainers: That’s a great experience! What attracted you to teach with Language Trainers?
Carlota: I loved the idea of teaching customized courses for each student since each one of them has different starting levels and expectations. As a result, my job as a Catalan teacher is never boring because every lesson feels like a new adventure.
Language Trainers: It sounds very fulfilling. What is your favorite thing about working with Language Trainers?
Carlota: I am very pleased with the work of Language Trainers because I am constantly in touch with the Course Coordinators, who are always willing to help and lead me through the administrative chores. Plus, they are brilliantly organized, which makes me feel confident because I know that I will always receive support in case I need it.
Language Trainers: I’m glad to hear that our staff makes feel so comfortable. Before you start a new course, what do you look for in a student?
Carlota: What I look for in a student is a strong commitment to making progress. Commitment is always followed by motivation, enthusiasm, and just a little bit of the students’ free time to put on this new challenge. The student that collects all of these traits will experience a beautiful and successful journey of not only learning a language, but also discovering a new culture.
Language Trainers: That sounds fantastic! And what about the other way around? What should students expect from you as their teacher?
Carlota: Students should expect fun and interactive lessons with a lot of different activities, as well as an affectionate teacher. One of the reasons why I love teaching Catalan is that the courses aren’t only about grammar, since I always try to fill them with stories and experiences.
Language Trainers: Those lessons sound like a lot of fun! So far, which has been your most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainers?
Carlota: I know I will never forget a course in which the student started as a complete beginner, not knowing a single word in Catalan, and by the fourth lesson, he was already using complex words and sentences that I didn’t expect to hear from him. I was extremely surprised by how fast he had learned and how much effort he was putting in immersing himself in Catalan.
Language Trainers: That’s inspiring! Thank you for sharing that experience with us. And why do you think students should enroll in a language course with Language Trainers?
Carlota: Those who want to learn a new language should absolutely enroll in a course with Language Trainers because they offer everything that a student can wish for: personalized courses and the opportunity to connect with amazing teachers from all over the world. Carlota: Most of the people who want to learn Catalan do so because they want to travel to Catalonia, or because maybe they have done it in the past and they loved it so much that they want to repeat the experience. And all of us know that a very important part of traveling is the food. In Catalonia, before starting a meal we use a great expression with the people we are sharing the table with, which expresses a wish for everyone to enjoy the meal: BON PROFIT!

Language Trainers: Welcome, Norman! We’re thrilled to have you with us today. Could you begin by telling us which language you teach and why you chose a career in teaching?
Norman: I teach Spanish, and I chose a career in this field because I’ve liked to teach since I was a child. I remember I used to play teaching to my friends and family when I was a pre-teen. When I grew up and started attending elementary school and then high school, I was chosen to monitor my peers in several subjects. I’ve always liked teaching; for me, it is a passion.
Language Trainers: It’s amazing how teaching was a calling for you from such a young age! And tell us, how did you prepare to make your dream of a career in education come true?
Norman: I studied language teaching at the University of Antioquia in my native country, Colombia. I also got a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrating Technology in the Classroom at the same university. I studied a Certificate in TESL/TEFL in Montreal, Canada as well. I started to teach Spanish before I even finished my university degree. I worked for the Municipality of Medellin for 9 years. At the same time, I was teaching Spanish for Technology at the Instituto Tecnologico Metropolitano. I also taught on the weekends at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. In Canada, I have been teaching Spanish in several language schools in Montreal and Toronto for the past 16 years.
Language Trainers: Wow, you clearly know teaching like the back of your hand! And what attracted you to work with us?
Norman: The schedules to teach are very flexible. I can arrange with the students when it is better for them and for me. Thanks to the new online classes, I can teach from the comfort of my own office or home. That is an advantage for the students too, since they can do the same.
Language Trainers: Online teaching has many perks indeed! What is your favorite thing about working with us?
Norman: I can make my own curriculum based on my students’ needs. The good communication with the staff at Language Trainers makes it easy to run the courses smoothly.
Language Trainers: It’s great to hear that our staff has been instrumental in your courses. When they contact you for a new course, is there something in particular you expect from your students?
Norman: First of all, what I look for in a student is their willingness to learn. They need actual motivation and dedication towards learning Spanish if they want to succeed.
Language Trainers: We completely agree on that! And what should students expect from you as their teacher?
Norman: I have almost 30 years of experience teaching Spanish. I studied teaching at university and, as I mentioned before, for me teaching is a passion. I may not be the perfect teacher but I always seek to make the teaching experience both enriching and enjoyable for my students, focusing also on the cultural aspects of the countries where Spanish is spoken.
Language Trainers: Those classes sound like fun! So far, which has been your most memorable teaching experience with us?
Norman: The most memorable experience was teaching a student who was a beginner at first. The course went all the way until she reached an advanced level. She told me that one day on the bus, she started to talk to a Latino person in Spanish. They chatted for a while. At the end of the conversation, the other person told her that she had a Colombian accent in Spanish. She replied: “my teacher is Colombian.”
Language Trainers: Amazing! That must be so rewarding for you as a teacher. And why do you think students should enroll in a language course with us?
Students have a complete learning experience with Language Trainers. They are accompanied all the time not only by their teachers, but also by the staff, who follow up on every student during the whole process. Norman: Thank you for your words and your time, Norman! Before you go, could you tell us your favorite expressions that you ask your students to learn?
Language Trainers: There are certain expressions that students love, like “¡Qué locura!” and “¡Qué horror!” In general, Spanish learners like the fact that you can pronounce the way you write. They also love that Latin Americans are generally very joyful and open, as well as loud when they speak. I personally try to teach not only the language, but also all the cultural aspects. For example, food is a topic that is always well-received, and I suggest students go to Latin American restaurants to try the savory food.

Language Trainers: Hello, Helga! We’re delighted that you could join us to narrate your experience teaching for Language Trainers. Could you start by telling us what language you teach and why you chose a career in teaching?
Helga: I teach Dutch, and I chose a teaching career because it is a beautiful way to instill your passion in someone's life.
Language Trainers: What a beautiful reflection! And how did you get ready for a career in teaching and what’s your past experience in this field?
Helga: I studied Dutch, German and Russian, and majored in Dutch. During my studies, I taught Dutch to foreigners in Belgium. When I graduated, I worked as a teacher in a primary school in Antwerp, Belgium for a while. Then, since 2018, I have been working as a Dutch teacher for Language Trainers.
Language Trainers: What took you to join Language Trainers in 2018?
Helga: I like to teach one-on-one classes since I can choose my own hours, and Language Trainers was perfect for that. Plus, I like how enriching it is to be in contact with people of different nationalities online.
Language Trainers: That’s one of the things we take the most pride in! What is your favorite thing about working with us?
Helga: Good communication and follow-ups.
Language Trainers: Communication is certainly key for a good working relationship. Now, enough about us, let’s talk about your students. What do you look for in them?
Helga: I like students who are enthusiastic about learning Dutch and who like to participate in class.
Language Trainers: And what should students expect from you as their teacher?
Helga: They can expect me to be focused on their development, and to do my best to make every lesson fun and interesting.
Language Trainers: I’m sure your students love that! What’s the most memorable thing that has happened to you while teaching for us?
Helga: I have made beautiful friendships with people from all over the world.

Language Trainers: Hello Homa! Thank you for being here. Let’s get started! Why don’t you first tell us what language you teach and why you chose a career in education?
Homa: I teach English, but focus on teaching mainly the American variety. I chose teaching as a career for many reasons, but mostly because I love to communicate with people of any nationality in English and to learn about their cultures and lifestyles. I am also enthusiastic about sharing my general and technical knowledge, personal experiences, academic research, and new findings with other people.
Language Trainers: Those are excellent traits in a teacher! And how did you start your career in the field?
Homa: I have a very strong business background, so that’s what I specialize in. I have taught many pre-MBA and MBA courses, as well as coached professionals in many fields. So, when I decided to switch my career to teaching, I knew that Business English should be my focus.
Language Trainers: That’s a very exciting specialization! And what attracted you to teach with Language Trainers?
Homa: I chose Language Trainers because they are professional, reliable, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and supportive.
Language Trainers: Thank you for such superb feedback! And regarding your students, is there any trait that you look for in them?
Homa: I mostly look for them to love learning and be enthusiastic about it. Respect and trust are other attributes that I seek in a student as well.
Language Trainers: What should students expect from you as their teacher?
Homa: Students should expect an easy and fun learning environment, up-to-date and interesting study materials, 99% improvement, and 100% satisfaction if they take classes with me as their teacher.
Language Trainers: That sounds fantastic! So far, which has been your most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainers?
Homa: My most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainer is the moment when one of my ESL students needed to get credit for the hours she had canceled due to her sickness. It was her first ESL program with Language Trainers. The company did give my student credit for those canceled hours and this thoughtful response made her incredibly happy and satisfied. Later, she enrolled with Language Trainers again for the second time, renewed her program on time and continued studying with me with peace of mind!
Language Trainers: I’m so glad to hear that our staff could rise to the occasion and make your student’s life easier. Do you think that the support provided by our staff is one of the main reasons why students should enroll in a language course with Language Trainers?
Homa: Definitely! But there are many other reasons too. They will learn from professional teachers who have many years of successful experience and expertise in teaching languages. Also, thanks to the support from the staff, students will avoid wasting time, effort, and money. Instead, they will be able to focus every minute of their time on learning.
Language Trainers: Thank you for your time, Homa! Before you go, could you tell us a fun fact about the language you teach or a favorite expression you ask your students to learn?
Homa: A fun fact about English is that some of the words are pronounced in such a way that they sound like funny or rude words in other languages. Sometimes, when I teach these words to my students in a class, and I concentrate on their pronunciation by asking students to repeat after me, they stop repeating, and instead, start laughing out loud! When I ask them what’s going on, and they tell me what these words mean in their mother tongue, I start laughing out loud too! I believe this could be a fun fact about teaching English as a Second Language. Regarding my favorite expression, I ask my students to learn this phrase: It is never too late to learn!

Language Trainers: Hello, Debora! Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions today. Could you tell us what languages you teach and why you chose a career in teaching?
Debora: I teach Italian, and I chose this career because teaching my native language while traveling the world has always been my dream. As a language student myself - I have been studying languages since the age of 10 - I know the importance of learning a new language with a native speaker.
Language Trainers: Certainly, learning with a native speaker can make all the difference. But, besides that, you are also very well-trained. Could you tell us about your teaching qualifications and history?
Debora: I am a graduate student from the University of Bologna (Italy) with a major in English and German linguistics and literature. In 2016, I set off to Oaxaca, Mexico to teach Italian as a second language, which has changed my life ever since. In September 2020, I decided to pursue a Master's Degree in Teaching Italian as a Second Language.
Language Trainers: That’s amazing! Having so many qualifications and so much experience sure makes you stand out in the labor market. So, what attracted you to teach with Language Trainers?
Debora: I applied for a job at Language Trainers because I was very much interested in teaching online. I was looking for a job that gave me the flexibility to continue with my travels while working on what I love doing.
Language Trainers: We are glad you applied to work with us. So far, what is your favorite thing about working with Language Trainers?
Debora: I love their flexibility and good attitude. Since I’m doing my Master’s right now, it’s great that I can choose my hours and teach from home, so I also have time to study. And the team is the best. They are always available and willing to help.
Language Trainers: Thank you for your kind words, Debora! And regarding your students, what do you expect from them?
Debora: I expect all my students to be motivated to learn the language and give their best in class. I always make my greatest effort to make sure that all my classes are motivating, but I also need my students to want to participate and improve their skills.
Language Trainers: That’s absolutely true. Without motivation, there is no learning. And what should students expect from you as their teacher?
Debora: They can always expect me to prepare classes adapted to their needs and interests and always give my best. Also, they can expect a relaxed learning environment, where it is okay to make mistakes and learn from them.
Language Trainers: That sounds like the ideal Italian class! So far, what has been your most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainers?
Debora: My most memorable experience was teaching an Online Italian Group Course with a fantastic group of coworkers who needed to learn Italian for their job. We had a lot of fun together and they made great progress in a very short time.
Language Trainers: Sounds like a lot of fun! And why do you think students should enroll in a language course with Language Trainers?
Debora: Language Trainers offers students from all over the world the chance to have their own personal tutor that will guide them through the intricate path of learning a new language. As if that wasn't enough, they can pick the start date and class times according to their schedule, so they can get started as soon as they would like.

Debora: Every time my students get frustrated because they are learning a complex topic and feel that they are not making enough progress, I tell them “tempo al tempo,” which means that they have to be patient and their efforts will yield the results they expect.

Language Trainers: Welcome, Jaya, thanks for talking to us today. Can you begin by telling us about your teaching background?
Jaya: Yes, of course. I chose to become a teacher four years ago, when I joined Teach for America. Since then, I have taught at Milwaukee Excellence Charter School, the number-one-ranked middle school in Milwaukee since 2016. I specialize at teaching English for business purposes, and have taught the language using a variety of methods, including guided instruction and small group instruction. I am especially proud to have tutored adults and younger students, alike.
Language Trainers: It’s great you have excelled in the profession so quickly, and what a great opportunity to work with Teach for America. So, what brought you to Language Trainers
Jaya: The Language Trainers staff asked all the right questions during the interview process, showing me how important they take it to find the right teachers for their clients.
Language Trainers: What is the best thing about working with Language Trainers?
Jaya: My favorite thing about working with Language Trainers is being able to build a relationship with my students and learn interesting things about them and their backgrounds, all while introducing them to new information and skills.
Language Trainers: That’s wonderful that you value a close connection with your students. What else do you look for in a student?
Jaya: I look for a student who is not scared to make a mistake and is willing to take risks while learning.
Language Trainers: Going beyond your comfort zone is definitely one of the fastest ways to learn a language. Besides challenging your students, what else can learners expect from you, their teacher?
Jaya: Students should expect the style that they prefer. I think learning is best done in the way the person receiving the instruction prefers, so I like to adapt to their needs.
Language Trainers: Can you remember a particularly proud or joyful experience from your time teaching with Language Trainers?
Jaya: With the pandemic causing so much disruption, it has been a joy to talk to my students about their views and opinions about current events while adapting to the virtual lessons.
Language Trainers: Ah, so you’ve switched to teaching online! That’s great you and your students and taken to it so well, and that you have continued to offer such excellent teaching. This is just one of the services we provide, but if you have to summarize why students should enroll in a language course with Language Trainers in just a few words, what would you say?
Jaya: Students should want to feel comfortable speaking whatever language they choose. Language Trainers will provide the support and confidence you need.

Jaya: In English, idioms are important for students to learn because they might hear them in common conversation and be confused. “You’re on the ball” is a great example and a positive one for them to learn.

Vitaliy: Thanks for inviting me!
Language Trainers: Why don’t you start by telling us about you, your background, and your teaching career prior to working with Language Trainers?
Vitaliy: Certainly! My name is Vitaliy, and I teach Russian, Italian, and French. I chose to become a teacher because of my passion for foreign languages and cultures, as well as my desire to share my knowledge about languages and cultures with other people who have an interest in learning more about them. My first experience with foreign languages started during the Soviet era, when I lived in Ukraine. I was born into a Russian-speaking family, and so Russian was the first language that I became acquainted with. Later, in second grade of elementary school, I began learning Ukrainian; as a general rule, everyone who lived in the 15 republics had to learn the official language of their republic, in addition to Russian. A bit later, I began learning English, and it wasn’t long after that I realized that languages and literature were my strength. Thus, I continued to learn other foreign languages during high school and college, namely Italian, French, and German, after I immigrated to the United States and attained the highest possible grades on all my assignments and exams. I decided I wanted to make foreign languages my career after pursuing a master’s program in translation at the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Kent State University. After graduating, I completed a number of freelance translation assignments, but my desire to share my knowledge of languages with others never left me. So, on top of my translation and proofreading assignments, I started teaching and began accepting tutoring assignments.
Language Trainers: And that is when you found Language Trainers. It’s great to have someone on our roster with such varied linguistic and cultural experience. Do you have a favorite thing about working with the company?
Vitaliy: I first started teaching with Language Trainers in 2016, when I tutored a student who needed to learn Business Italian. I was immediately thrilled by the ability and willingness of the course coordinators to help me find and adapt the right teaching tools, so that the student would find them useful and feel enthused to continue learning. This was such a pleasant surprise that I have since continued my collaboration with Language Trainers and gladly accepted numerous other assignments, which were not just interesting and inspiring in their own right, but also allowed me to grow professionally and personally. So, I would say my favorite things about working with Language Trainers are the flexibility of the timetable, ease of communication, and the encouragement to have regular discussions with the course coordinators about the best way to fulfill a student’s learning goals. For example, the course coordinators I have worked with have always done a fantastic job of listening and being considerate to both my students and myself. Also, Language Trainers is always willing to go that extra mile by answering my questions and helping me to secure suitable teaching materials, such as online textbooks, audio files, and other resources that I can review at my convenience and decide if they are suitable for my student.
Language Trainers: It sounds like you really put in a lot of effort with your students. What else can they expect from you as their teacher? And what do you look for in a student?
Vitaliy: The three things that my students can expect from me are logical and organized lesson materials, a preparedness to answer any questions and my talent for identifying their language strengths and weaknesses. I always prepare the lesson materials in advance, after carefully considering how the student absorbed the presented concepts in previous lessons. After all, teaching without a clear lesson plan is a road to failure. In addition to this, a truly good teacher must always be able to answer any questions that a student might bring up or at least point him/her in the right direction. For example, if a student asks about how a certain grammatical concept works or the context in which a certain conversational phrase is used, the teacher should always know the answer. Last, but not least, it’s absolutely essential for a teacher to evaluate the student’s performance and identify his/her areas of strength and areas of weakness. This is so both teacher and student can revisit the areas with which the student has had difficulties, to clarify the concepts that the student has a hard time understanding, so that the student can move forward and utilize those concepts properly. Meanwhile, the first and the foremost thing that I look for in a student is the their motivation to learn. Even if the student is struggling with certain concepts during the course, if I see that a student wants to learn and is willing to put his/her best effort into their studies, then I know I can help them to achieve their goals. Typically, I see this right away. I realize that some languages like Russian can be very difficult to master, but if the student is motivated and finds a way to enjoy and have fun while learning, then it’s easier to work with that student.
Language Trainers: Do you have a moment from your time teaching with Language Trainers that you think of fondly?
Vitaliy: It has always been pleasant and enjoyable, but my most memorable experience comes from my most recent teaching assignment. When we were about halfway through the course, the COVID-19 struck in my state. Suddenly, I felt like this assignment was something precious; something that kept my mind focused on the positive side of life. I was very thankful to my course coordinator, as well as my student, for their flexibility to ensure we could continue lessons via Skype. I felt such positive emotions as a result. I feel so grateful the company helped the lessons to continue, so I could focus my mind on the future and something else besides the difficulties of the pandemic.
Language Trainers: Why should students enroll in a language course with Language Trainers?
Vitaliy: Language Trainers provides such a range of useful and interactive tools and materials to instructors, ensuring they can encourage students to learn at their own pace. For example, for all of my teaching assignments, even after I developed a lesson plan for a student, I paid very close attention to determine how quickly or slowly the student absorbed newly presented information. Then, by using the right tools and materials recommended by Language Trainers, I could adjust the pace of the course as needed. This in turn helped my students to stay motivated and confident throughout the learning process.
Language Trainers: And last of all, do you have some interesting facts you like to teach your students about the languages you teach? Would you mind sharing one or two with us?
Vitaliy: I like to teach useful expressions. One of the most popular expressions among my Russian students is, unsurprisingly, “Вы говорите по-русски замечательно,” which translates as “Your Russian is excellent!” It’s a rather long-expression and contains words with many syllables (the second word has 4 syllables, and the last word has 5), and it’s both fun and challenging to learn.

Language Trainers: Hi, Erin! Can you tell us something about your teaching background? Why you teach, your qualifications and history, and what attracted you to Language Trainers
Erin: Hello! Yes, I teach English. I have CELTA certification in English as a Second Language and have worked as a teacher since 2008. I have taught classes online, and delivered face-to-face courses in company offices and language schools. I chose a career in teaching because I enjoy meeting people from different countries and, also, I wanted a job that allowed me to travel. Language Trainers offered me the opportunity to work one-to-one with students (online and face-to-face) and gives my students and me flexibility on how we want to schedule our lessons.
Language Trainers: What is your favorite thing about working with Language Trainers, and can you think of any fond moments from your time working with us?
Erin: The communication is very good between the management and the teachers. And anytime my students and I play Taboo to review new vocabulary is fun and memorable.
Language Trainers: What are your expectations in your classes? What should your students bring to each lesson, and what do you expect of yourself?
Erin: I enjoy working with students who enjoy talking about various subjects and are also comfortable working on grammar production, or grammar in spoken context. Meanwhile, my students can expect me to place lots of focus on speaking production, correct sentence structure and new vocabulary.
Language Trainers: It sounds like you work hard to give your students a solid foundation of language knowledge. Are there any fun expressions you like to teach, as well?
Erin: Oh, yes. English is full of them. Just today, I discussed the expression 'hit the nail on the head' with a student, which means to find the exact right answer.
Language Trainers: Would you recommend all students to study with Language Trainers?
Erin: Definitely! The one-to-one interaction with a teacher makes the experience very personal. Students can communicate directly to their teacher about what specific things they need help with.

Marija: Hello, yes, absolutely. I have a Master’s in teaching foreign languages. I have been teaching my native language (Serbian), English and Spanish for with 13 years to students of all ages.
Language Trainers: You must enjoy a lot of success as a tutor with so much experience and so many languages you can teach. So, what attracted you to teach with Language Trainers
Marija: I’ve been working with Language Trainers for one year now and it has been amazing! The team is very helpful and friendly. Really great company! Marija: I ask my students to expect to spend a lot of our lesson time speaking, so they use the foreign language in a genuine way. Otherwise, I expect my students to work hard, so they learn quickly and efficiently.

Marija: Well, if I am always speaking, the students are not. For students to achieve the communicative practice they need, the solution is simple: the less I speak, they will. Otherwise, my goal is to motivate and direct students by creating an interesting and dynamic learning environment, where they can develop their language skills and overcome any communication barrier.

Language Trainers: Finally, can you tell us a fun fact about the language you teach or a favorite expression you ask your students to learn?
Marija: Since I teach three different languages, English, Spanish, and Serbian, with totally different linguistic roots, I often find very interesting similarities and differences between them, which I like to point out to my students. Otherwise, I like to teach my students slang, idioms, and useful jargon, so they can understand everyday speech and not just the formal speech.

Ryan: Very well, thank you. And you?
Language Trainers: Good, thanks! Thank you for agreeing to talk to me about your teaching experiences at Language Trainers! For our readers, please can you tell me which languages you teach and a little about your history as a teacher?
Ryan: Absolutely. I teach English and Dutch, although I have to say, I didn´t choose a career in teaching, it chose me! I live in Brazil and many people want to study other languages but don´t always have the means. I have been blessed with the opportunity to study many languages, so I thought it was a great way to give back... And now I love teaching!
Language Trainers: That’s wonderful, it sounds like you have found your calling, that’s for sure! Tell us about your teaching qualifications and history.
Ryan: I don´t have any formal training as a teacher, because I originally studied communications and worked as a communications consultant before I moved to Brazil, but I´m studying and learning every day. In two years of English lessons, studying every week, I learned so much about students, ways of teaching, and how to be confident, and I bring that experience to my own courses.
Language Trainers: And what attracted you to teach with Language Trainers? Do you have a favorite thing about working with our company?
Ryan: I became interested in Language Trainers because it is an international company, and it has great contacts with students all over the world. But my favorite things about teaching with company are the amount of freedom I have in how I work, and the support I get from such an understanding team. And, of course, the opportunity of working with students from all over the world!
Language Trainers: I’m so pleased to hear you say that. We offer our teachers as much teaching support as they want, but ultimately, we want you to have flexibility, so you can not only adapt course content to suit the students, but also teach when and how is best for you. So, your students can expect flexible, well-planned teaching from you. What do you expect from your students in return? Does anyone student stand out in particular?
Ryan: I like all my students because everybody has a different story, different talents and different difficulties. I learn a lot from everybody! But my favorite students are the ones that have a good sense of humor! But my most memorable experience was my first student with Language Trainers: a young man preparing to go on an exchange experience in Holland. I remember feeling a huge responsibility.

Ryan: Dutch is a fun language, but difficult for some students, especially the pronunciation. I try to refer to words in other languages that have compatible sounds, but it isn´t always possible. Then I´ll just say: "Dutch is verschrikkelijk" which is a very hard word to pronounce, and means "terrible!"

Language Trainers: Hello, Piero! Thanks for agreeing to share your teaching experiences with us today! Let’s begin with your history, qualifications, and why you wanted to be a teacher in the first place.
Piero: Hello. Well, I have always had a passion for languages and travels. I really enjoy socializing with foreigners and learning about their home countries and culture. Teaching my native language, Italian, and also English felt like a natural fit, so I completed my studies as an Italian instructor at Siena, Italy. I. I also got an EF SET certification in Advanced English. Professionally, I started to teach Italian in Italy with a caregiver agency; I mostly taught classes to Eastern Europe students. In 2011, I left Italy, initially to do volunteer work, and I taught languages because it’s something I could do from wherever, allowing me to travel at the same time. Since then, I have had students in the USA, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, and Brazil, including both individual or group lessons. Most of my experience is with face-to-face lessons, but in 2019, I started giving online classes, as well.
Language Trainers: What attracted you to Language Trainers? Why do you like working with our company?
Piero: I was looking for a very good online school that could provide me with enthusiastic students. But even better is the staff; everyone is very professional, friendly, competent, and supportive with all my teaching needs.
Language Trainers: What are the main things you look for in your students? What do you hope they will bring to each lesson?

Language Trainers: Please can you begin by telling everyone what language you teach and why you chose to become a teacher?
Silvia: Yes, certainly. I teach my native language, Spanish, as a foreign language. I have always found the field of language learning and teaching very attractive and have wanted to be a teacher since I was very young. I like to help people achieve their language goals, and support a bilingual society because I being able to speak at least two languages is important for people to interact with and understand others from different places and cultures.
Language Trainers: Oh, I think you’re absolutely right! So, you teach Spanish to help people get to know the many Spanish cultures around the world. Where did you study? What are your qualifications?
Silvia: I hold a bachelor’s degree in language teaching from Santo Tomás University in Bogotá, Colombia. Currently, I am working on a specialization in Spanish teaching as a foreign language. I have over 15 years of teaching experience online and face-to-face, and have worked with all ages and both small and big groups of students.
Language Trainers: And have you enjoyed working with Language Trainers? What made you want to work with us?
Silvia: Language Trainers has been a real blessing. Actually, it is such a great company for any language teacher. I have the opportunity to work from home while connecting with nice, kind, and interesting people from around the world, or I can travel and still continue working. Language Trainers: Can you think of any standout moments of your time teaching with us? Or can you tell us your favorite thing about working Language Trainers
Silvia: My favorite thing, without question, is being able to interact with different people from all over the world. As for a standout moment, I cannot pick just one experience. I have taught General Spanish, medical Spanish, and Spanish for business to many students. All of them are great people with very different profiles and backgrounds, from my youngest student, who is 9, to my oldest, who is 65. I am grateful for the contributions they all have made to my personal and professional development.
Language Trainers: So, you have taught a real range of students, then! But is there anything, in particular, you look for in your pupils? Something that tells you they will do well in your lessons?
Silvia: I like to have students who understand the value of speaking foreign languages and want to learn.
Language Trainers: Definitely! What about the other way around? What can students expect from you, their teacher?
Silvia: I am a teacher who listens to my students. I make a big effort to find the best teaching approach for each student, to help them achieve their specific goals.

It’s a great general question to use in any situation to break the ice and start a conversation, even if you are a beginner student.

Language Trainers: Welcome, Fabrizio! Thanks for agreeing to this interview. Can you give me a quick summary of your teaching history and background? How did you come to teach with Language Trainers?
Fabriio: Yes, of course! I was born and raised in a German-speaking country. I first discovered my interest in modern languages in high school, and later continued my studies at college. I decided to become a teacher because the career offers a variety of fun ways to simultaneously learn and teach, while also building meaningful relationships with students from all walks of life. So, I took several classes in teaching foreign languages to maximize my ability to teach and interact with students, and now I teach German regularly. I wanted to work with Language Trainers because the company offers great flexibility: lesson times and locations can be chosen by the teacher, in agreement with the student; likewise, materials can be determined by the teacher in order to best cater to the needs of each student. Language Trainers are very transparent as to what they expect and what they're able to provide. And whenever I am in need of advice, their response time is fast and they provide plenty of helpful hints.
Language Trainers: We are always happy to help such hard-working and successful teachers, like yourself, Fabrizio! Language Trainers: I agree completely! And what about the reverse? What can students expect from you in return for their dedication?
Fabrizio: Students can expect from me a high level of preparation and experience. They'll be helped whether they're attempting to learn a language for pleasure or professional reasons, whether they view themselves as slow or fast learners, whether they're more laid back or very ambitious. In other words, I have learned over the years to adjust my approach to each student’s personality, expectations, and talents.
Language Trainers: And is there anything in particular you like to teach your students? A fun or interesting phrase, perhaps?
Fabrizio: Since quite a few of my beginner students resort to the standard answer of "no clue!" when asked about something in German, I love to teach them that, in German, we say "Keine Ahnung!" or "Ich habe keine Ahnung!" which draws a chuckle from most of them.
Language Trainers: Can you tell us your most memorable experience with Language Trainers?
Fabrizio: I have had several memorable teaching experiences while working with Language Trainers. But my most rewarding moments have been with those students who come to our lessons with a sense of achievement after having used their skills to understand their friends by communicating in German. Whenever a student gets positive confirmation outside the classroom from their own peers that they've noticed an improvement, and then they come back to class and relate that to me, it tells me that we're on the right track and getting closer to the student’s envisioned goal.

Language Trainers: What language do you teach and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Catherine: I teach Spanish and English for Language Trainers. My childhood in Belgium, love of traveling, and desire to communicate instilled in me the value of language learning.
Language Trainers: You know many languages. Where did you study?
Catherine: I studied language at the University of Houston. But growing up in Belgium, you don’t study language; it’s more a way of life. So I’ve been learning and speaking different languages my entire life. By the time I moved to the states, I felt like I couldn't live here without learning Spanish. So I began studying and traveling. By traveling, I learned how language barriers can be a huge impediment and just how much languages should be valued.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Catherine: I certainly expect that my students are very involved in their own learning process. That’s number one. I want students to concentrate on doing every day activities in their target language. Through this, I believe teachers can help students gain fluency, without immersion. Some people think, “I only have three weeks to learn a foreign language. I can’t go to (whichever desired country).” But, yes you can! All you need is the knowledge and desire to succeed.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Catherine: I remember once I was at the airport in Tokyo and there were students waiting in line to get their passports checked, just to practice their English. I like to work especially with students in their areas of interest. Like these Japanese students, I prefer that my students do something they would already normally need to do and in their target language. If they like cooking, I advise students to look up recipes in their target language. If they listen to music while exercising, I recommend they search for songs in their target language.
Language Trainers: What is one of your favorite experiences from your time with Language Trainers?
Catherine: I’ve recently been working with a couple in Houston. It was difficult at first because they were each at very different skill levels: the husband knew a lot but spoke little, and the wife knew barely any Spanish. So we set up a system where the husband would start classes first, and then the wife would join in later. All of a sudden, there was this jump. I used exercises in business language with the husband to show how to express himself in the workplace –now the confidence is there, and he speaks with ease and fluency. The wife was more timid, and thought she wouldn't be able to learn, saying she was too old to start from scratch. Now she sits in on meetings, understand the majority of conversations, and contributes to them with ease. Her goal for this year is fluency. It’s been amazing to watch the transformation through their lessons. And it’s the flexibility and diligence Language Trainers provides that allows them to succeed at great lengths.

Language Trainers: What language do you teach, and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Carol: Teaching was one of my careers, and the other was public policy and advocacy, with extensive writing. I chose teaching because I felt that I would be good at it, and I wanted to reach people in ways that I'd rarely been reached when I was a student. I particularly like to teach upper-level English to adult professionals because we discuss topics of mutual interest, like social policy, the work place, current events, the arts and literature. I love teaching writing in particular, and have many years of professional writing experience.
Language Trainers: Where did you study, and how long have you been teaching, and what age group do you usually teach?
Carol: I studied at Ohio Wesleyan University, the University of Madrid, George Washington University and Colgate University. I have taught students from ages 13 to maybe 45. I was a classroom Spanish and English teacher in public and private high schools, and also taught at George Washington and Southeastern Universities. In my second career I conducted workshops on Congress and how to have an impact on public policy.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Carol: I look for clarity of why the student wants to improve his/her English; how he or she will use it. I look for someone with interest in discussing topics in the above-mentioned areas. And I look for someone willing to put some time beyond our tutoring sessions into study.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Carol: Students should expect a well-rounded adult with a lot of experience in teaching, writing and public policy analysis who listens well and tailors the sessions to the student's needs and interests.
Language Trainers: Describe your favorite teaching experience with Language Trainers:
Carol: I have had only two students, and enjoyed both of them tremendously. One was a middle-aged German male executive in a high tech firm with two children and a diplomat wife. The other was a young Chinese female accountant who has many, many interests and was willing to read American classics to discuss them.

Chavah: I teach English. And my reason for choosing to teach is simple. There is nothing more important than communication. If I can help a person communicate, they are functional and confident. That is why I teach –to enable effective, confident people to express themselves.

Chavah: I studied at the University of Wisconsin, George Williams College, and Loyola University. I have taught for twenty-five years. I teach adults, of any age. Sometimes I’ll teach kids one-on-one as well.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Chavah: Both curiosity and initiative.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Chavah: Students should expect both attention and empathy from me.
Language Trainers: What is your favorite aspect of working for Language Trainers?
Chavah: My favorite aspect of working with Language Trainers is the variety of people and their variety of needs: from reading or writing, to speaking or listening!

Friedel: I’m qualified to teach from pre-Kindergarten onwards and I have taught in almost every level, however I focus on adult and high school students.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Friedel: Above all, the desire to learn!
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Friedel: Students can expect dedication and a love of learning. I work differently with each student according to their learning styles, and I always focus on their needs and what they want to learn. I work in a state of the art teaching style and encourage learning opportunities.
Language Trainers: What has been your favorite teaching experience?
Friedel: All of the students I've received through Language Trainers have been fantastic people. Beyond that, they've been great students to work with –both driven and motivated to learn!

Maribel: I teach English as a second —or other—language. I come from a long line of teachers: both parents, aunts, and uncles are all teachers. To me, there is no career more rewarding. I love to see that sparkle in the eyes of my students when they start to understand. Knowledge is power and I want all of my students to have everything they need to succeed in any endeavor they choose.
Language Trainers: Where did you study, how long have you been teaching, and what age group do you usually teach?
Maribel: My focus has been Business English for the most part –however not exclusively. I’ve taught all levels from beginner to advanced. I studied English literature at Fullerton College in Fullerton, California and journalism at University of North Texas. I have the TEFL certification and have completed The Compton Method of Accent Reduction.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Maribel: I love to see a motivated student. I also make it my mission to give students the confidence they need. I try to make sure classes are interesting and seek to motivate them through my own desire to learn.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Maribel: Students should expect and receive a program which suits their individual needs. My curriculum is very specific to each student, built according to what they wish to focus on. As a teacher, I will push them; it might get repetitive, and their jaw muscles may hurt, but we will always have fun.
Language Trainers: What’s your teaching secret to success?
Maribel: I always tell my students, “Together, we can do this!” I have said that to all of them. I want their feedback. It helps me build lessons plans specifically for them. I have seen programs that worked, and those that didn’t. From these and throughout my 13 years of teaching ESL, I build successful lessons plans that work for my student.
Language Trainers: Describe your favorite aspect of working with Language Trainers.
Maribel: I get so much support from the team. I’m used to having to bear everything on my own, so the support I get from Language Trainers is essential. From materials for the students, to great links to books, I trust them to send me the best resources. I’ve been working with Language Trainers for three years and I can say with all honesty, they are one of the best schools I have worked with. Language Trainers: What language do you teach, and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Michele: I became a teacher for two reasons. First, I have always loved studying foreign languages and cultures; and secondly, I enjoy the relationships that develop between my students and myself.
Language Trainers: Where did you study, and how long have you been teaching, and what age group do you usually teach?
Michele: I have a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in French and Spanish, and a MA from NYU in French Literature. In addition, I’ve lived in both France and Spain. Since the age of 22, I have been teaching almost continuously. I have taught all levels –secondary, college, and language institutes that cater to adults.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Michele: The best language student is both curious and analytical. Most important, he/she is willing to speak and make mistakes in the process! That’s the only way to improve.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Michele: As a teacher, I have never adhered to only one pedagogical method. I find what works best for each individual.
Language Trainers: Describe your favorite aspect of working as a language teacher:
Michele: It’s always fascinating to hear how my foreign-born students react to life in the United States. I’m able to view American culture through their eyes.

Language Trainers: What language do you teach and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Jim: I teach Spanish and chose teaching as a career because I viewed it as a fantastic second job. Also, if a person has experience teaching Spanish, they may be able to combine various forms of experience.
Language Trainers: Where did you study, and how long have you been teaching?
Jim: I studied at the University of Nebraska, at Kearney, and at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska. I have been teaching for nearly two years and the age group I usually have taught have been adults over the age of 18.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Jim: I like a student who is positive about wanting to learn. I especially like a student who makes an effort to learn, and also understands that what they learn is not only up to the person teaching them, but also up to their own efforts and what they want to get out of learning.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Jim: Students should expect me to know how to teach a class. I don’t think it is unreasonable to have a teacher who may not know every little bit of information about the subject material, but a keen knowledge should be expected. In any case, there are times in which I have learned from my students rather than the relationship being the other way around.
Language Trainers: Describe your favorite aspect of working for Language Trainers:
Jim: My favorite aspect of working for Language Trainers is that it allows me to continue to add experience to my teaching credentials anywhere that I live. I am in a career in which I have to move from place to place periodically, and it’s nice to have the experience and connections. The program is really a fantastic one for someone looking for part-time supplemental experience.

Language Trainers: What language do you teach, and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Dimitar: Well I began teaching at Sofia University immediately after I received my MA in Bulgarian studies. My major is literature, and I began focusing on language relatively recently in 2007. In that year, I became a Bulgarian instructor at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. I realized then that through language, I could do more for my culture. Being a Fulbrighter myself, I started teaching Bulgarian literature and culture to American Fellows at the Fulbright International Summer Institute in Bulgaria. For two years now, I teach also at the Bulgarian School in New York, HristoBotey. I actually came to New York with a perhaps too ambitious project to launch the first Bulgarian academic unit in the city and the Tristate area. This is to account for my visions and intentions –as I haven’t yet given up on this idea.
Language Trainers: Where did you study, how long have you been teaching, and what age group do you usually teach?
Dimitar: My BA, two MAs (Bulgarian Studies; Cultural Studies) and my PhD (in Literary Theory) I got from Sofia University. I specialize in teaching BA, MA and PhD students but lately I’ve been teaching Bulgarian to children between 5 and 12 year old and also to people between 30 and 70 year old. The approaches are different, but the language is the same, so the challenges are not that unique. Kids learn faster, but men and women value the magic of learning a language more.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Dimitar: Curiosity; curiosity towards the “mystical” ability of every language to project a world that is not entirely the same. Bulgarian aspects of the verb, for example, always open a new horizon –it’s like an alternative reality, our system of tenses and moods. Diligence and seriousness unhampered by a sense of humor and lightness in approaching language’s strangeness are also important qualities. The most important moment is the “click,” this readiness to collaborate and interact with the teacher.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Dimitar: I believe that teaching a new language is an integral process that involves not only repetition, learning by heart, exercising, practicing, creating situations for students to identify/perform, etc. but also to get into language’s character, mentality, and worldview –to get to know the people who speak this language.
Language Trainers: What is your favorite aspect of working with Language Trainers?
Dimitar: With Language Trainers, students are monitored and taken care of every step of the way. Not only are they meticulous to the very last detail, but they allow students to be involved in their own learning process every step of the way.
Language Trainers: Do you have a favorite teaching experience?
Dimitar: My favorite teaching experience is the moment when I feel that the student has come to the point of entering the language. This is the moment when I discover that the student has already created intuitions, sense, and sensibility about their new language.

Language Trainers: What language do you teach and why did you choose teaching as your career?
Linda Maria: Teaching chose ME as a career after a number of years in the corporate world. I went through a life-changing evaluation of my personal and professional priorities and goals. I wanted to use the international work experience in a way that would “give back” to the world, and I felt this was possible through teaching English and coaching adult professionals on international cultural and business practices.
Language Trainers: What age group do you usually teach?
Linda Maria: I teach adults and all of my Language Trainers students thus far have been lawyers, investment bankers, IT specialists, politicians, company owners/founders, advertising and marketing executives, and a number of wives of foreign executives. Every student is unique and an inspiration to me to be a better teacher!
Language Trainers: What is your teaching philosophy?
Linda Maria: I believe that in life, we are all teachers and students to one another. My general philosophy is that our lessons are either positive —or not so positive—and we learn important lessons from both. When I teach, I’m personally and professionally so much happier. I’m helping and mentoring others in a very positive way. Our mutual experiences together as teacher-students reach so many others in the most amazing way!
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Linda Maria: On a personal level, I look for curiosity in a student, a willingness to make the most of their experience in NYC and in the USA in general, and the ability to think critically, probe deeper, and understand the bigger picture. On the technical and practical side, I look for a few things and assess these in every class or as often as possible. These are: a student’s need for the targeted language, the student’s motivation, the student’s individual prominent learning style, and any outside learning barriers or interferences.
Language Trainers: What should students expect in you as a teacher?
Linda Maria: As a teacher, I am enthusiastic, caring, and strongly encouraging of my students that they try their best…and then some! I expect much out of my students and I hope they expect even MORE from me. I do give a lot of myself. I’m empathetic and understanding to their feelings and life situations, as I’ve been in their same situation myself. Many of my Language Trainers students have been ‘shell shocked’ by their working experience in the United States; both at the pace to perform and the workload to handle. Our classes are the one place they can comfortably express this and feel understood.
Language Trainers: Describe your favorite aspect of working for Language Trainers.
Linda Maria: I love working for Language Trainers as well as the opportunity to work with such fantastic and interesting students from all over the world. I really cannot describe just one favorite teaching experience. Every class and every student is different. What I love most of all about teaching is that my students are teachers to ME. They push me to be a better teacher and a better person. They bring their world to me, and they do so with much grace, charm, humor, and integrity. To Language Trainers I’d like to say, thank you for the privilege to work with such students, and for the opportunity to be their teacher.

Language Trainers: Hi, Vera! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to becoming a Portuguese instructor?
Vera: Certainly! My name is Vera. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and have been living in Houston, Texas, since January 2001. I’m a psychologist specializing in Human Resources and Education. My sister, Sue Anderson, invited me to join her language company, which led me to teaching Portuguese.
Language Trainers: How long have you been teaching, and who have your students been over the years?
Vera: I’ve been teaching Portuguese since 2001, working with both individual students and groups, often from oil companies. I also taught Portuguese to over 25 students from an American church who were preparing for missions in Brazil. Currently, I teach Portuguese at Rice University. In 2014, I began offering online Portuguese classes, and in 2017, I started teaching children.
Language Trainers: Could you describe your teaching approach and the materials you use in your classes?
Vera: Students learn Portuguese through a range of materials, including textbooks, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and audio and video equipment. I also develop teaching materials and strategies tailored to ensure every student reaches their language goals. I adapt my lessons to each student's needs, especially for those who have specific learning requirements or schedules. And I love integrating cultural insights into the language lessons! For example, I might explain the origin of the days of the week in Portuguese and then ask students about the days in their own language, which they often find surprising and intriguing.
Language Trainers: You seem very engaged with the Portuguese-speaking community. Can you share more about that?
Vera: Absolutely! I’m a translator (English ↔ Portuguese) and a notary, and since 2004, I've been organizing the Houston Expat Brazilian and Portuguese Speaking Meetup group. We now have over 1,700 members! I’m very connected to my culture and love sharing it with others who want to learn about Brazil and the Portuguese language.

Language Trainers: What language(s) do you teach? Why did you choose a career in teaching?
Dominika: I teach my native language, Polish. I chose a career in teaching because I like to help people with something I went through myself, so I can show them an easier way to do it. I also find it very rewarding to see the progress of my students speaking my own language.
Language Trainers: Tell us about your teaching qualifications and history.
Dominika: I started teaching languages when I moved to Spain at 19 as an au-pair. I was teaching two little girls English, and I realized how much I enjoy it. I’ve lived in a few different countries and can speak four languages myself, so teaching has always been a huge part of my life.
Language Trainers: What attracted you to teach with Language Trainers?
Dominika: I saw a job offer online, and it was available in the city I live in. Straight away, I thought it was a great opportunity and couldn’t resist applying. To this day, I don’t regret my decision.
Language Trainers: What is your favorite thing about working with Language Trainers?
Dominika: The flexibility of being able to do it online from anywhere in the world. I can teach while traveling and meet interesting people from different countries.
Language Trainers: What do you look for in a student?
Dominika: I look for a student to be motivated and patient with their progress since Polish is one of the hardest languages in the world.
Language Trainers: What should students expect from you as their teacher?
Dominika: Students can expect to have a really fun experience as I have a pretty good sense of humor! :) They can also expect to see real results as long as they practice what I teach them.
Language Trainers: Describe your most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainers.
Dominika: Recently, I’ve been teaching Polish to two Australian kids, who are siblings, and they were learning new words like family members. When I told them that "brother" in Polish is "brat" and asked them to use it in a sentence, we laughed a lot because they said things like "Ethan to mój brat," which means "Ethan is my brother," but “brat” sounds a bit offensive in English. It was really funny!

Amee: I hold a Master’s degree in Home Science with a specialization in Human Development (MSc) and a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed). With nearly 15 years of experience in the field of education, I have taught and trained diverse age groups, from children to adults. I have served as the head of a school for preschool through grade four and have trained early childhood educators and teachers on educational philosophy across India. Maria: Eu trabalho em uma área do escritório que cobre toda a América do Sul, havendo então a necessidade de desenvolver capacidades na língua espanhola e ter um conhecimento a nível profissional do idioma.

Maria: O nosso grupo já teve três professores. Com o primeiro professor, tivemos um período de familiarização com o novo idioma e expansão de vocabulário. Com o segundo tutor, nós focamos no aprofundamento gramatical, para então com o terceiro professor com o qual a pouco começamos as aulas, termos ênfase em polir e sofisticar a língua, focando a aprendizagem em áreas específica.
Language Trainers: Você poderia elencar as características de cada um e os pontos positivos do processo e da metodologia utilizada?
Maria: A metodologia vai sendo construída com o passar do curso, sem um direcionamento pré–estabelecido, e essa, vai se moldando de acordo com a necessidade dos alunos. Recursos multimídia, como músicas e filmes são sempre usados.
